Theresa Crowley Spitler ....
Montoursville, PA-based artist Theresa Crowley Spitler works in a variety of subject matter and media. She uses charcoal, graphite, oil and pastel to explore light and shadow, form and color. Her portraits often are rendered in charcoal or graphite because she said she feels that the lack of color can enhance the character and expression in a face. Theresa recently has begun working with pastels.

She says, "The pure color and intensity of pastel is very exciting. Pastels can be handled boldly or with a gentle touch. Pastels give immediate satisfaction because the colors are always ready with no need for mixing. I paint mostly on a sanded pastel paper, which holds a lot of pigment. I can apply many layers to give the painting a deep, rich appearance.
"For me, painting is not about what I paint; it's about transposing something that creates a feeling within me to a two-dimensional surface, and how to solve that problem while creating something beautiful or thought-provoking in the process. As I apply layers of paint or pastel to a painting I reveal a part of myself that hopefully connects with the viewer."

Theresa has won awards in local and regional juried exhibitions. She is a member of the Bald Eagle Art League, the Coalition of Independent Artists and Artisans, the Susquehanna Art Society, Berks Art council, and the Sullivan County Council on the Arts.
